Summer Vocal Institute 2010
July 21-30
Now at three levels for singers ages 6 - 18
New this year! SVI Primo for young singers ages 6-9 July 26 – 30

Now at three different levels of instruction, Summer Vocal Institute (SVI) helps vocalists discover their vocal potential and provides the tools for students to become more confident performers. Students have numerous opportunities to perform on a daily basis in various groupings: solo, duets and trios, choral, larger ensembles and musical theater scenes. All students perform in the final concert on Friday, July 30, 7 pm at the Hingham campus.

 

 

 

SVI Canto

for singers ages 14-18
July 21 - 30, Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Co-Directors: Lorna Jane Norris & Dr. Brad Fugate
Vocal Coach: Steven Morris
Collaborative Pianist: John Kramer
Visiting Faculty: Michael Joseph - Artistic Director of Company Theater, Norwell.
$550 (SSC students enrolled in the Spring 2010 semester receive a 10% discount)

This unique eight-day vocal experience helps students advance their performance skills and achieve their performance goals. Students are immersed in both musical theater and classical styles. SVI Canto provides an insight into the commitment, motivation and the background knowledge necessary for higher education programs in vocal studies.

SVI Mezzo

for singers ages 10-13
July 26 - 30, Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

$300 (SSC students enrolled in the Spring 2010 semester receive a 10% discount)

You don’t need to have studied privately to get the most out of this wonderful, beginning vocal opportunity! SVI Mezzo focuses on age-appropriate vocal technique and repertoire, and helps students discover the full potential of their instrument, preparing them for more advanced studies.

Daily master classes at this level include:

  • Diction
  • Interacting with an accompanist
  • Stage deportment
  • Stage movement and “terms”
  • Practice techniques
  • Musicianship for Singers
  • Yoga/relaxation techniques
  • Overcoming stage fright

SVI Primo

for singers ages 6-9
July 26 - 30, Monday-Friday 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

Yoga instructor: Meg Durkin
$300 (SSC students enrolled in the Spring 2010 semester receive a 10% discount)

Our youngest singers apply healthy warm-up and vocal techniques to diverse, fun repertoire from many genres including folk, classical and musical theater. Each singer has an opportunity to sing solo as well as in an ensemble.

A typical day at this level consists of:

  • 45 minutes of yoga
  • Ear Training/basic theory
  • Repertoire rehearsal
  • Vocal warm-up
  • Group games and community building
  • Acting the song

Auditions

Auditions for placement and repertoire assignment are required. SVI Canto applicants should prepare two songs: one classical and one musical theater. SVI Mezzo and SVI Primo applicants may audition with one song from any genre. An accompanist is provided.
