Summer Music Festival 2009

July 6 - July 17
Jane C. Carr Amphitheater, Hingham
Music Director:  Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr.
Program Director: Ed Sorrentino

South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Festival exposes musicians to a variety of musical art forms, and provides a comprehensive music education not found anywhere else in New England. South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Festival (SMF) provides woodwind, brass and percussion students outstanding educational experience through study and performance of the finest wind and chamber ensemble literature. With the unique opportunity to participate in all three ensemble components of SMF, and through musicianship workshops, students enhance their listening skills, technical abilities, and overall musical sensitivities, in addition to being exposed to improvisation, composition and creative movement.

Summer Music Festival also provides collegiate music students the opportunity to perform, instruct, and be mentored by master teachers. SMF also provides music educators the opportunity to have meaningful interactions with the SMF faculty and/or guest artists.

Working with hours modified to accommodate musicians at all levels and ages, the festival’s nationally respected team of musician/educators strive to expand the musical knowledge of each young student, and help each student reach their highest level of performing excellence. The ideal 7 to 1 student/teacher ratio makes this possible.

The Conservatory’s state-of the art rehearsal and performance space, the Jane Carr Amphitheater, creates a professional atmosphere in which students can build musical confidence, knowing that the sound they hear during rehearsals will be the same sound they hear during a performance.

What can I expect from Summer Music Festival?

  • Opportunities to perform in outstanding wind, jazz and chamber ensembles
  • An opportunity to work with a nationally recognized composer-in-residence
  • Increased musical knowledge and skills
  • State-of-the art rehearsal and performance space
  • Exposure to New England’s best team of educators
  • To meet other talented musicians

Festival Wind Ensemble
July 6– July 17
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 12 noon
Tuition: $400
Festival Wind Ensemble allows the outstanding high school and college musician to experience advanced wind ensemble literature. The program’s early hours leave afternoons free for students who may have other responsibilities during the summer months. This performance-oriented program combines highly talented students and substantial wind literature, with one of the country's leading wind conductors. Participants in this program are chosen by auditioning with an All-State/District level piece.

Summer Wind Ensemble
July 6 – July 17
Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 12 noon
Tuition: $400
Responding to the challenging demands of today’s busy music student, Summer Wind Ensemble (SWE) offers a two-week concentrated program, focusing on the development of the individual musician. Playing in the large ensemble helps build each student’s self-assurance, so that each one can confidently use their learned skills to perform in SWE’s smaller chamber groups and jazz ensembles. SWE students will enjoy the benefits of working closely with experienced coaches, expand their musical understanding, and interact with talented musicians from other communities.

Summer Music Festival Jazz Ensemble
July 6 – July 17
Monday through Friday, 12:30 - 2:30 pm
$100 for FWE/SWE students
$200 for non FWE/SWE students

SWE and FWE students are invited to audition for this ensemble.

Praise for Summer Music Festival

This is what former SWE/SMF students, many of whom are currently performing, teaching, and loyal arts supporters, had to say about Summer Music Festival:

I have sent Foxboro students to South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Wind Ensemble program for over 20 years. The program’s culture of high musical standards, passionate teaching and learning, caring and supportive staff, guest artists and composers, and hard working students from many communities, have always provided inspiration to all of my students. Most of my students returned summer after summer to experience artistic music-making in a beautiful wooded setting.
- Stephen C. Massey, Music Director, Foxboro High School

The quality of music making and the intensity, passion and focus with which that music making took place is what kept me coming back to Summer Music Festival. Even after performing with the Eastman Wind Ensemble for a year, I returned to Summer Music Festival because I knew what takes place there is special and unique, and that I would be challenged and energized by the entire experience. I am confident that my time at SMFl successfully prepared me to enter a career in music, and I am deeply grateful.
- Eric Laprade, Randolph Public Schools

South Shore Conservatory fostered in me a love for music-making. The devoted faculty, unique experiences, and special environments helped me to realize my potential not only as a musician, but as a person. Without those experiences, I would not be the musician and teacher I am today. Quite simply, it changed my life.
- Aaron W. Bush, Needham Public Schools, SMF 1996-2005

My time at the South Shore Conservatory Summer Music Festival was one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. The faculty constantly encouraged me and my peers to think beyond just the notes on the page. I was always challenged to play with more beauty, expression and lyricism. I created lasting relationships with both conductors and musicians who have helped me to develop into the musician and educator I am today.”
- Cami Tedoldi, Ludlow Public Schools

Summer Music Festival fosters a reciprocal relationship between student and teacher. Whether playing in the ensembles or coaching them, I have always been encouraged to lead and challenged to follow. The experience is an invaluable one, whether music is our ambition or our avocation, as we are always learning from, and teaching one another.
- Michael Keough, UMass Amherst, Music Student

My summers at SWE shaped who I was as a musician and a person. Being able to share such terrific, quality music-making with other students like myself was a wonderful experience. From those summers, I formed lasting friendships that I still have today. Some of us are now music educators, some are parents, doctors, community leaders – we all still have the sense of commitment and purpose that was instilled in us at the Conservatory. As a veteran music educator, I highly recommend it for the growth and horizon-expanding experiences that this kind of summer program provides!
- Kathleen Walsh Wooten, Instrumental Music Specialist, Scituate Public Schools

My son had a life-changing experience at South Shore Conservatory Summer Music Festival. Because of his involvement and connections made, he went on to major in music performance at Boston University. The music-making was exquisite and the professionalism of the conductors and staff was top notch. This program is a hidden jewel in the South Shore area. If you want your music students to have a greater focus and empower them to create a covenant with music making, the South Shore Conservatory summer program is a giant step in the right direction.
- Peter Tileston, Music Director, King Philip Regional HS
