Summer Music Festival

Sponsored by Francis R. Doran Insurance Agency, Inc.

South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Festival exposes musicians to a variety of musical art forms, and provides a comprehensive music education not found anywhere else in New England. South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Festival (SMF) 2008 provides woodwind, brass and percussion students outstanding educational experience through study and performance of the finest wind and chamber ensemble literature. With the unique opportunity to participate in all three ensemble components of SMF, and through musicianship workshops, students enhance their listening skills, technical abilities, and overall musical sensitivities, in addition to being exposed to improvisation, composition and creative movement.

Summer Music Festival also provides collegiate music students the opportunity to perform, instruct, and be mentored by master teachers. SMF also provides music educators the opportunity to have meaningful interactions with the SMF faculty and/or guest artists.

This year, Summer Music Festival has invited nationally-recognized composer Mark Harvey to work with SMF students at all levels.

Working with hours modified to accommodate musicians at all levels and ages, the festival’s nationally respected team of musician/educators strive to expand the musical knowledge of each young student, and help each student reach their highest level of performing excellence. The ideal 7 to 1 student/teacher ratio makes this possible.

The Conservatory’s state-of the art rehearsal and performance space, the Jane Carr Amphitheater, creates a professional atmosphere in which students can build musical confidence, knowing that the sound they hear during rehearsals will be the same sound they hear during a performance.

What can I expect from Summer Music Festival?

  • Opportunities to perform in outstanding wind, jazz and chamber ensembles
  • An opportunity to work with a nationally recognized composer-in-residence
  • Increased musical knowledge and skills
  • State-of-the art rehearsal and performance space
  • Exposure to New England’s best team of educators
  • To meet other talented musicians

Playing in the large ensemble helps build each student’s self-assurance, so that each one can confidently use their learned skills to perform in SWE’s smaller chamber groups and jazz ensembles. SWE students will enjoy the benefits of working closely with experienced coaches, expand their musical understanding, and interact with talented musicians from other communities.

As part of the Summer Music Festival curriculum, SMF Jazz Ensemble teaches jazz theory and improvisation techniques, explores various styles of literature available for the traditional jazz combo and large ensemble, and allows participants to experience music of contemporary composers and arrangers. SWE and FWE students are invited to audition for this ensemble. FWE and ASB students accepted into the program would be expected stay until 2:30 pm and would pay an additional $100 to participate.

NOTE: Ensemble program placement is determined by audition. When scheduling an audition, please indicate jazz interest as well.
