Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr. Scholarship
![]() |
This summer we're honoring one of the shining stars in the Conservatory's 40-year history. Bill Rowell became Director of the Summer Wind Ensemble (now Summer Music Festival) in 1982, with the vision of providing "an artistic experience that would have the potential to transform the lives of young people." For almost thirty years, that is exactly what he has done. The Conservatory is proud to honor Bill's invaluable contributions with the establishment of the Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr. Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a Summer Music Festival student who is planning to major in music education or performance at the college level. Please help us reach our goal of raising $25,000 to endow in perpetuity the Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr. Scholarship. Your gift will be permanently connected to this lasting tribute to Bill's profound influence on the lives of young music students. Thank you! |
Kathleen Sharpe wins 2011 Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr. Scholarship

This year's Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr. Scholarship was presented to Kathleen Sharpe. A resident of Foxboro, Kathleen commuted to South Shore Conservatory in Hingham for three consecutive summers to play the oboe in the Festival Wind Ensemble. In her essay, Kathleen emphasized the importance of risk taking for a musician. She asserts that these musical risks develop not only the musician's confidence, but his or her ability to lead. It is with this attitude and appreciation of all that she has had the wonderful fortune and dedication to learn that Kathleen declares her desire to continue in her role as a leader and give other students the opportunity to take risks and grow as musicians and individuals. "Very soon, I will begin a new stepping stone in my music education to become a music teacher," she writes, "I look forward to my future of sharing all that I already know and investing in others." Congratulations, Kathleen!
