David Cross
David Cross, clarinet, has been a popular clarinetist, saxophonist and teacher in the Boston area since the early 1980s. In 1978, Mr. Cross earned a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied clarinet with Stanley Hasty and saxophone with Ramon Ricker. While at Eastman he performed under the batons of Howard Hansen, Donald Hunsberger, Ramon Ricker and others in performances of the Eastman Philharmonia, Eastman Wind Ensemble, Musica Nova and Twelve O’clock Jazz Band. In 1978 he was principal clarinetist in the Eastman Opera Department’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute conducted by David Effron. After graduating from Eastman, Mr. Cross studied with Boston Symphony clarinetist Peter Hadcock for several years.
Since 1980 Mr. Cross has been the principal clarinetist for the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra, "The Professional Orchestra of Southeastern Massachusetts"", performing with such noted guests artists as The Paul Winter Consort, The New Black Eagle Jazz Band, and the Sesame Street Show. Mr. Cross has also performed with the New Bedford Symphony, the Southeastern Massachusetts Pops Orchestra, the Quincy Symphony, Arcadia Winds, Eastwood Swing Orchestra, and the South Shore Conservatory’s "Evenings Under the Stars" concert series at the Jane Carr Amphitheatre in Hingham. Mr. Cross has performed with The New Sousa Band, appearing with guest vocalist Anna Maria Albergetti, and performed in a national tour with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. An accomplished theatre orchestra musician, Mr. Cross performs frequently with the Company Theatre (Norwell), Orpheum Theatre (Foxboro) and the Cape Cod Playhouse. He is a regular member of the orchestra for Heart to Heart Players (Taunton), where he has performed with Broadway stars Shirley Jones, and Betty Buckley.
A dedicated teacher, Mr. Cross has been a member of the music faculty of the South Shore Conservatory since the early 1980s, where he has taught private lessons, music theory, and chamber music. Mr. Cross is a former Assistant Director of the Conservatory and was the Managing Director of the Summer Wind Ensemble for many years. During this time Mr. Cross was also a member of the music faculty of Eastern Nazarene College until accepting a position as Assistant to the Director of the Boston University School of Music in 1991. In 1998, Mr. Cross left Boston University, pursuing a second career in Computer Technology and continues to be a busy freelance musician and teacher.
