Beth Canterbury

Soprano, Beth Canterbury Department Co-Chair, is earning a reputation as a versatile and dynamic artist and teacher. Long interested in the intersection of the arts and education, Ms. Canterbury graduated from Kenyon College where she designed an interdisciplinary major studying Education Policy, Reform, and the Role of the Arts in Education. She then enrolled at the Longy School of Music where she earned her Master of Music degree in Opera Performance.  Her operatic roles have included Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Despina (Cosí fan tutte), Mabel (Pirates of Penzance), and Josephine (HMS Pinafore).  Recent oratorio engagements have encompassed Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Nelsonmesse, and Rutter's Magnificat. Ms. Canterbury is also committed to performing new and experimental works; in his review of a program of the music of composer Allen Shawn, Richard Dyer wrote in The Boston Globe: "Canterbury sang with charm, warmth and easy high notes."  In November she sang in the regional tour of the new opera for children, The Bug Opera.  Ms. Canterbury is Chair of the Voice Department at South Shore Conservatory where she also holds the position of Associate Director for Opera by the Bay.
