Here at South Shore Conservatory we are proud to offer four unique disciplines of yoga, each one unique and supportive to the personal development and growth of the South Shore community. For special members of our community we offer Yoga for the Special Child®, Therapeutic Yoga is designed for individuals who desire personalized training in yoga for health and wellness, Yoga for Performers focuses on the unique demands of performing artists, and Yoga 4 Classrooms brings yoga directly to the classroom.

Yoga is an established system for development of each aspect of the individual. Yoga at South Shore Conservatory is available to everyone, regardless of age or ability. The word yoga means to yoke or unite; bringing body, mind and breath together through disciplined practice. Yoga has been used for thousands of years to develop concentration, improve body awareness, enhance health, develop emotional stability, create community, and provide a greater sense of overall well being.

Yoga for the Special Child®

Yoga for the Special Child® is a comprehensive program of yoga techniques that enhances the natural development of individuals with special needs. This style of yoga is gentle, safe, and requires no special equipment. By practicing this style of yoga, students realize benefits which include mindfulness, concentration, physical ease, emotional balance, and ultimately peace of mind and happiness. Working on an individual basis to start, each class follows a structured outline that is designed to foster the individual’s level of development. Students participate in five essential yoga practices: music, breathing practices, cleansing practices, body postures, and deep relaxation. These practices are designed to strengthen and stretch the entire musculoskeletal system, balance the nervous system, increase breathing efficiency, improve body awareness, improve communication skills, increase each student’s ability to self regulate, and provide a relaxing and engaging experience.

Any individual with special needs is welcome to attend. Yoga for the Special Child® is suited for all ages, 0 to adult, at all levels of ability. Populations served include, but are not limited to: individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Delays, Neurological Disorders, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, and other physical and mental developmental challenges. Students in wheelchairs are welcome to attend, as are non-verbal students.

The Development of Yoga for the Special Child®
Sonia Sumar, the founder, worked with her own daughter Roberta, an individual with Down Syndrome, and discovered a natural and intuitive way to unlock her daughter’s potential. Throughout the years she refined her methods, and is now a world-renowned yoga teacher who trains passionately throughout the world.


Therapeutic Yoga-Individual Sessions

Therapeutic yoga is a highly adaptable, private lesson format designed for individuals desiring a yoga practice tailored to health and wellness goals.  Therapeutic yoga is appropriate for:
Stress reduction, private instruction on specific focus areas of yoga (meditation, breath work, postures), anxiety and panic disorders, rehabilitation from injury, illness or surgery, aging populations, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other medical conditions.

Therapeutic yoga utilizes the methodology of Integral Yoga. Integral Yoga is a comprehensive system for developing the individual, and was used by Dr. Dean Ornish in his work regarding reversing heart disease. The goal of Integral Yoga is to empower students to access an elevated level of health and wellness. Highly adaptable to different types of bodies, Integral Yoga is safe and gentle for everyone. No prior yoga or athletic training is required, students are supported at their current level of health and wellness. 

A typical Integral Yoga class includes the following components:

  • gentle stretching-simple yoga postures provide an opportunity to increase strength, gain muscular & joint flexibility, develop stamina, increase body awareness, regulate motor control and improve posture
  • breathing practices-improve lung capacity, increase oxygenation of blood & brain, improve mental focus, clear sinuses, stimulate energy levels
  • guided meditations-experience greater levels of calm & peace in your everyday life as you are gently led through simple and relaxing contemplative exercises.
  • chanting and/or recorded music-listening to preferred music or nature sounds help support relaxation. Simple and short chanting experiences also provide an opportunity to develop breath control and awareness.
  • deep relaxation-A calming and refreshing rest period activates the parasympathetic nervous system, brining the physical body into a state of deep rest, aiding healing, integration of learning, and activation of the relaxation response.

Yoga for Performers

Yoga for Performers at South Shore Conservatory provides training for musicians of all ages to enhance their musical development through improving body awareness, breath control, mental focus, physical stamina, balanced posture, and cultivating one’s ability to enter a “flow” state where effort and ease are balanced in service to one’s musical experience. This program is a premiere training ground for musicians on the South Shore, offering individual sessions, co-teaching sessions with private instructors, master classes, and group classes. The result is a body and mind that are equally prepared for the rigors of performance. Yoga for Performers uses the style Integral Yoga to inform its class structure.

Integral Yoga is a comprehensive system for developing the individual, its goal is to empower students to access an elevated level of health and wellness. Highly adaptable to different types of bodies, Integral Yoga is safe and gentle for everyone. No prior yoga or athletic training is required, performers of all ages are  completely supported at their current level of health and musicianship.

A typical Yoga for Performers class includes the following components:

  • gentle stretching-simple yoga postures provide an opportunity to increase strength, gain muscular & joint flexibility, develop stamina, increase body awareness, regulate motor control and improve posture. Regular use of these movements can help prevent injuries common to musicians, and develop proper awareness of the appropriate use of the body in relation to ones instrument.
  • breathing practices-improves lung capacity, increases oxygenation of the body and brain, improves mental focus, clears sinuses for freer singing and breathing, stimulates energy levels and moderates performance anxiety.
  • guided meditations-students experience greater levels of calm and peace in their music studies as they learn simple and relaxing contemplative exercises. Meditation and visualization enhance ease of performance and support deep concentration during practice sessions and rehearsals.
  • chanting and recorded music- simple and short chanting experiences provide an opportunity to develop breath control and awareness, facilitate coordination of the two hemispheres of the brain, and nurture a connection to each performer's innate musical prowess.
  • deep relaxation-A calming and refreshing rest period activates the parasympathetic nervous system, brining the physical body into a state of deep rest, aiding healing of tissues damaged by repetitive motion and aids integration of learning. Activation of the relaxation response and training ones ability to access this relaxed state aids each performer to discover new levels of ease onstage, in the practice room, and at rehearsals.

Yoga 4 Classrooms®

Yoga 4 Classrooms® is a simple, effective and sustainable program designed for use in the elementary school classroom.  This program empowers students and educators to create positive, peaceful, and productive classrooms that support exceptional learning and a lifetime of health and wellness.  It is based in evidence-based classroom pedagogies, developmental science, cognitive affective neuroscience, tenets of positive psychology, and secular contemplative practices.
The curriculum is focused on social-emotional learning, self-regulation skills and addressing the whole child – social, emotional and physical.  It is grounded in mindfulness and yogic practices and developed to systematically cultivate well-being, resilience and lifelong learning. Yoga 4 Classrooms® includes a mix of yoga postures, brain boosting movements, breath exercises, visualizations, mindfulness activities, creative movement and community-building games.

Yoga 4 Classrooms Program Components
The Y4C Professional Development Workshop is a one-day workshop open to any school professional (includes the 230 pg., fully-illustrated Yoga 4 Classrooms manual and Activity Card Deck)

Classroom Residency involving 10 weekly sessions of 1/2hr. held in the classroom led by a Y4C Trainer

Parent Education via a pre-residency informational kick-off meeting and 10 weekly handouts that support what is being shared during the residency.
